Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Varela is blasting post–Vatican II liturgical chaos, saying widespread abuses have turned the Mass into a “parody” that has wounded the sacrament itself, the conscience of the faithful and even basic human sensibility. In a sharp interview with El Debate, the archbishop emeritus of Madrid argued that the “almost anarchic indiscipline” of the 1970s pushed many faithful back toward the preconciliar tradition — and renewed calls to restore Summorum Pontificum.
