Multiple people have been left trapped in an avalanche at a popular ski resort, sparking a frantic search and rescue operation.

The avalanche hit Sweden’s Kiruna municipality just southeast of Riksgränsen, with initial reports suggesting ten people had been swept away before disappearing underneath the snow. At least seven fire engines and two ambulances have been scrambled to the scene.

Officers received an alert at 1:45pm local time today, but it took rescuers 45 minutes to reach the mountain, the service’s command operator said. According to local police, five people were dug out of the snow by others on the mountain before rescuers arrived.
