Pope Leo XIV has tapped Bishop Eusebio Ramos Morales of Caguas to take over the archdiocese of San Juan, Puerto Rico, ending Archbishop Roberto Octavio González Nieves’ long run at the helm since 1999. The Vatican announced the switch Aug. 6 as it accepted González’s resignation after a tenure marked by crisis, from Hurricane Maria to the COVID-19 pandemic. González, a Franciscan ordained in 1977, leaves behind a bruising but consequential legacy in Puerto Rico, where he was honored in 2023 for helping guide recovery after Maria.
