Mexico’s bishops are marking the Cristero War centennial with a stark warning: a century ago, “the bells of the churches were silenced,” churches were shut for two years, and Mexicans turned against each other in a religious conflict that left martyrs behind. In an Aug. 4 video message, the Mexican Episcopal Conference said the anniversary is “not merely an anniversary; it is a time of grace,” honoring believers who kept the faith alive “when the churches fell silent” and “did not kill for Christ but died for him.”
