Days after the Vatican declared the Society of St. Pius X in schism, the group’s biggest North Carolina congregation sealed a huge land deal — buying more than 26 acres near Charlotte for a major new complex. Saint Anthony’s Chapel in Mount Holly says the timing was accidental, not a statement, but the symbolism is explosive: as Rome tightens the screws, SSPX loyalists are expanding. Project manager Jim DePiante says the new property will one day hold a residence for priests and a new church, calling the move “tremendous hope” and insisting, “We are determined, and we are undeterred.”
