SUPREME COURT: DREADLOCK SHAVE, DAMAGES DENIED
The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that Louisiana prison guards who handcuffed a Rastafari inmate and shaved off his dreadlocks cannot be hit with damages under federal religious-liberty law, even after he showed them a ruling protecting that very practice. The decision deepens the fight over how far RLUIPA reaches and leaves prisons with little financial fear when they flout inmates’ faith rights, setting up more courtroom battles ahead.
