Before dawn, Medjugorje awoke to horror: statues of Our Lady blackened with paint and blasphemous graffiti, and the outdoor altar at St. James Church set ablaze just days before the annual youth festival. Local authorities say multiple Marian sites — including Apparition Hill and the area near the Blue Cross — were hit in a coordinated attack, stunning pilgrims and wounding a shrine long known for prayer, confession and devotion. But the parish is answering desecration with the very message that made Medjugorje a global pilgrimage center: prayer, fasting, conversion and forgiveness, refusing hatred even as the attack lands as a brutal assault on faith itself.
