For years, the narrative was simple: religion was fading, the pews were emptying, and faith was headed for extinction. Now the numbers are jolting the other way — Harvard’s Cooperative Election Study found Gen Z Americans identifying as Catholic jumped from 15 percent in 2022 to 21 percent in 2023 — even as trust in government, media and higher education keeps collapsing. And this isn’t a trendy makeover: for young Americans, Catholicism means swimming hard against modern culture, yet they’re showing up anyway, with 18-to-29-year-old Catholics emerging as the Church’s most engaged generation, more likely to attend Mass, go to confession, spend time in Eucharistic Adoration and stay active in parish life.
