Pope Leo XIV has approved the latest shake-up in the Irish Church: Bishop Gerard Nash of Ferns will now also lead Ossory, in a move that unites the neighboring dioceses in persona episcopi while leaving them legally separate. It’s the first such merger outside the West of Ireland, signaling that the diocesan consolidation spreading through Ireland is no longer a regional experiment but a national trend — and, as Nash himself put it, it will continue “as opportunity allows.”
