A Polish billionaire is bankrolling a towering 55-metre Virgin Mary statue in Konotopie, a concrete-and-steel colossus now already drawing coachloads of pilgrims and gawkers even before it’s finished. Set to be blessed on Assumption Day, August 15, the monument will be Europe’s tallest Marian statue and is meant to shove the tiny village onto the pilgrimage map — but it’s still surrounded by debris, mud and scaffolding, a raw symbol of faith, money and ambition.
