In a chilling act of betrayal that underscores the grave national security threats America faces from within, Chenguang Gong—a U.S. citizen and former military defense engineer—has pleaded guilty to stealing thousands of sensitive files tied to cutting-edge missile detection technology, including designs funded by the Department of Defense. While masquerading as a loyal employee at a Christian-founded defense firm in Southern California, Gong funneled over 3,600 classified documents to personal devices, many after secretly accepting a job with a competitor. Prosecutors revealed that these stolen blueprints—critical to detecting nuclear and hypersonic missile threats—could devastate America’s defense edge if fallen into enemy hands. Even more disturbing, Gong had deep ties to China’s state-run “Talent Programs,” aimed at exploiting American innovation for Communist military expansion, and once confessed via email that he “took a risk” to help China build “high-end military integrated circuits.” Yet, despite the staggering $3.5 million in damages and the unknown whereabouts of key stolen drives, Gong remains free today on a $1.75 million bond. His sentencing is not until September, raising troubling questions about America’s resolve to confront espionage from within.
